Network Speeds- Tips

One aspect of a regional service, with AskAwayers assisting patrons from all over BC and from Yukon, is that there are small technical differences between libraries which lead to varying network speeds.  There are also differences that may vary day-to-day, and affect some institutions sometimes and not other times.

December Stats and User Feedback Now Available!

The December AskAway stats and user feedback are now available on the AskAway Portal:

Usage statistics for December have been posted here: http://www.eln.bc.ca/askaway/index.php?page=statistics
The stats include the number of sessions accessed via Qwidget, the total number of sessions and other interesting facts.

Keeping Campfire Useful

Hi all,

This is just a quick post responding to some feedback we have had, related to keeping Campfire as useful to everyone as possible. There is no issue with using Campfire for casual chatting with other AskAwayers, as long as everyone staffing AskAway at the time doesn’t mind. At times on weekdays it can be distracting for AskAway staff who are multitasking, as there is no way to tell if the sound of a new message is casual chat or a service issue.

QP Virtual User Group Meeting

UBC BIOL 140 Assignment

Dear Colleagues on AskAway,

Thanks everyone in advance for your support with our biology undergraduates. We are starting to see BIOL 140 students at our in-person desks and we anticipate they will be visiting AskAway soon too!

EBSCO PDF Bug Workaround

Hi folks,

Caroline Daniels at KPU passed on info about an EBSCO db bug which results in the wrong PDF displaying when a user tries to view an EBSCO article PDF in their browser - it will display the wrong article from the same issue of the journal.  EBSCO reports they are working on the issue, but passed on a workaround:

In the meantime, as a workaround, you can disable PDFs from being viewed in your web browser which should allow you to view the correct article. This can be done by:

UBC big engineering classes

Colleagues:

Starting with this week, we are teaching approximately 1,800 UBC engineering students in a number of major engineering classes - Engineering Cases (APSC 150), Engineering Communication (APSC 176) and Technical Communication (APSC 201)
