I want to alert AskAway librarians to 2 things that may come up when dealing with Kwantlen students. We hope to have both incidents resolved soon but just in case you come across it in the next few weeks:
1. Security Certificate Alert
A student may be asked questions about such a certificate, or an unsecured connection when using the new IE and Firefox browsers to access certain parts of our website including the research databases or the study room booking module. It does give you options to proceed but some users are unsure whether they should - and frankly the messages sound fairly serious. However, students can proceed with their search by acknowledging the risk and clicking through. KPU is in the process of licensing the certificate so that this message no longer appears.
2. Proxy server Virtual Max
Students may also get a ezproxy warning that the proxy server has reached its maximum virtual host limit. This will only happen with certain databases, namely our Crim and Nursing Sage databases. We are reworking our proxy server so that this will not happen any longer but the fix will not be in until after the Olympic break. A workaround is to get the student to login to another database, namely one of the old standards like Academic Search Premier or Business Source Premier. Tell them not to close their browser but rather go back to the Kwantlen list of databases and log into the database that was giving them the error message. The proxy should let them in at that point.
AskAway Librarians should feel free to call me directly if you encounter the above 2 problems, or any others.
