Increasingly, when Safari users click on a PDF full text icon in a licensed database, they get a “missing plug-in error”. This is due to an incompatibility between the Safari 5.1 browser and the Adobe PDF viewer plug-in. EBSCO support has posted a FAQ on the problem, and they suggest that users install a plug-in as a workaround until the software issue is solved.
We can recommend that Mac users use the Firefox browser, although if they have OSX 10.4 or higher, they will also need a PDF browser plug-in. More information is available here.
If users are unable or unwilling to follow the above steps, and they are using an EBSCO database, they can email the citation plus PDF full text to themselves, and then open the attachment from their email account.
Comments, questions, and any other tips on working with this issue are welcome.
